Happy Monday.  I went Junkin this week end and helped the hubby paint the deck and both of these things started a whole lot of change up!!!!! I found a new treasure and a few unforgotten things in my own shed and little paint on the deck and next thing I know there was change happening.

It all started with this little treasure I got while Junkin at Tattered Tiques.  Oh yes look at this cute chippy bed.  My husband again with some tools was able to make my chaise lounge fit into this old vintage bed.  I thought it brought some whimsy to the chaise.

Added some bed skirt ruffles and my chaise lounge cover and now I feel like I could take a nice nap out there on a cooler afternoon.  It is so hot here in Chicago land this week.  In the high 90's and humidity.  While I was out taking pictures I was drenched from the humidity.

Remember those old chippy posts we got at the flea market last summer well they are now acting as plant hangers on my deck.  We are hoping to make a cute garden shed soon out of these old posts.  I am collecting doors and windows for this project.

I had this old white trunk in the shed and I polyurethaned it to the max and put it at the end of the bed.

My old flower cart.  My poor flowers are taking a beating this week already with the heat so high and our water is partially softened in our town, so the salt gets to my plants at this time in the summer.  We are thinking about a rain barrel for next year.  My flowers do so well until about the end of July to the first of August and then the water here starts to burn the roots.

Cute cottage chairs I got at Menard's for $20 bucks.

Old chippy ladder on the deck.

This is my white wagon that I had my Christmas tree in last year.  I pulled that out of the shed too.  It is too cute to be stored until Christmas.

I had this old head board in the shed so brought that out and then I had this old cedar chest that I got a the flea a few years ago for $30 so I polyurethaned it and now I have storage for the pillows etc. when it rains.

Cute pillows I found at TJ Maxx.  They are outdoor pillows so I think they will keep their color with the sun beating on that deck all day.

My Hubby's fire truck by the shed.  I  put this poor plant that is not doing well in the truck.  I am hoping with some help, and this area being partly shaded  it will come back.

Poor thing looks so scraggly but I am hoping with some TLC it will come around.

This old bench I have had out in the garden for a few years.  Anything I put on that cute bench does really well.

Hung my chandelier on the corner post for light at night on the deck.  I am still looking for cute shades for this chandelier.

Here is a back view of the deck so you could see the old chippy posts.  Love those posts.

My little gardening angel. Love her sweetness.

Another old ladder in the garden.  This area is a special place in my garden.  My 15 year old basset Molly that we lost this winter use to love to lay in this part of the garden.  Bassets usually do not tolerate heat too well but she loved to be outside under those bushes in that spot. Molly would lay out in that spot for hours each summer day.  So we buried her ashes there this Spring and then planted the area with flowers and special mementos.
It takes away the sadness of missing her,  to know her ashes are buried in her favorite spot.

Close up of that special part of my garden.

This is the Singing Bird Cafe.  This is where all different birds come to hang out and eat.  They sing when I fill the feeders.  Just love that happy singing when they eat.  They are messy little party eaters!!!!! It gives me pleasure to see how excited they all get when I load up the feeders throughout the yard.

Well there you have it, the special treasure that started the whole change to the outdoor deck room of my house.
Hope your week is cooler than ours.  No break for us this week. Not sure I will reading out in my new lounge bed this week.  Too hot and sticky.
PS:
Midge even was partaking in some sun while I was taking pictures. Such a diva!!!!! Right after I snapped her picture she wanted me to go and get her a Frosty Beverage!!!!
Have a great week.
Kris

  1. Oh my gosh! You have so inspired me, you have no idea! I have a white bed very similar to the one you showed. It is a twin. How do you protect the mattress? I have so many cute things, but I have had no idea how to do my porch/deck. Currently the table is black iron, oh there are too many decisions to make. Thank you so much for sharing all this yumminess. I'm just hoping the bed will fit on the deck.

  3. It sounds about as hot there as it is here, Kris! Your photos certainly make it look cooler. I love, love that bed! What a handy hubby {and a sweetie} to fit your chaise inside it. Everything looks beautiful. With no rain in our forecast this week, I have to remember to go out and water all my flowers so they don't die in this heat and humidity.

All of your plants look spectacular, aren't you glad you went with petunia's? They are literally flowing over your pots! You've done an amazing job with your deck and I love the special little spot you created for your precious pup. So sweet.:)

Your flowers look like they're still thriving!! Hearing about the salt water brought back memories of living in Wheaton and buying salt for the water softener. Anyway, your deck is just too cute with your chaise made into a bed! You have so many wonderful chippy finds to make a very whimsical outdoor room. LOVE it!!!

    1. Hi Roxie,
Thanks for your sweet comment about Molly. I know you understand about losing a wonderful pet. She had a good long life for a basset hound and was pretty good until she got sick this winter so I will always be grateful for that. We still have Libby our other basset that is now 10 years old so that helps. I know you miss your Phoebe. They truly were big parts of our families. Have a great week my friend.

  21. What a precious little bed! Love all of your things. So many great ideas. Just gorgeous. I am painting a piece of furniture to put outside and wondered if painting it with poly would help keep the weather from ruining it. It will be in an uncovered area. I love all the chippy white stuff for the garden. It does not work with my house unfortunately....I was kind of shocked when I moved here and realized that all my shabby white stuff did not work in this garden. So...it all had to come inside.

  22. Just when I think everything is perfect at your house you go and make another perfect change.

It never gets too hot in our back yard and I could picture your lovely space right outside my living room window.

I am going to look for an old chest like yours for storing garden pillows. I like your idea of polyurethane to make them more resistant to the weather.

  24. Hi Kris! This is phenomenal! I can't believe how much your flowers have grown in such a short period of time! I hope that the salt in the water won't bother them. I guess it would be a real pain to have to bring in bottled water for them, but a rain barrel for next year is an excellent idea! I love how your chaise looks framed out in that gorgeous bed and all of the other wonderful treasures that you've given new life to out on the deck! It's so pretty and inviting! I think I see my napping spot - move over Midge! I'll be there around 2:00 LOL! Hope you get some cooler weather soon! Ours in making its way up through the 90's this week, may hit 100+ YUCK! 45. Kris,

I saw your home featured in The Old Painted Cottage this month and fell in love. What a dream home!! I have been stalking that blog ever since my husband decided to leave the Air Force, to get ideas for our new home. Finally we are able to make changes to a home and call it ours. We searched for four months until we found it and moved in not a day to soon since I gave birth to our baby boy the next day!!! Trying to turn my home into a country cottage with a four month old and two year old is quite the adventure. I would love any suggestions that you could give. Especially the names of any good flea markets. I'm familar with your area since I was raised just north of there but Im just starting to learn the ropes of our new town in Belvidere, IL, near Rockford. Thanks in advance.
Many Blessings to you and yours,

  79. that chaise bed is so cute! I want an outdoor bed so bad!! your hubby is a genius, i tell ya. love the chippy post plant hangers and all the flowers look so beautiful. A rain barrel is probably a good idea for you...might be good for me too, as it is just better for plants in general. hope you've been enjoying the deck on these cooler days!
